What rental assistance help covers

Rent help in South Florida is spread across county programs, city programs, and charities. Each has different rules, different paperwork, and money that runs out at different times of the year. Most families give up somewhere in the middle of that.

A New Life in Christ Ministries and Resources helps you get through it:

  • Working out which programs you qualify for in your county and city right now
  • Helping you complete the applications and gather the documents each one wants
  • Referring you to emergency rental assistance through Miami-Dade and Broward programs
  • Connecting you to legal help if an eviction case has already started
  • Looking at the whole household — families behind on rent are often also eligible for food and health coverage they have not claimed

Who qualifies for rental assistance

Rules vary by program, but almost all of them ask for the same four things:

  • You live in the county where you are applying — Miami-Dade or Broward
  • Your household income is under a limit, usually set against the area median income
  • You can show a hardship — lost work, reduced hours, a medical emergency, a death in the family
  • You have a lease in your name and a notice or statement from your landlord

Some programs also want proof that you can keep paying rent after the assistance ends. Staff will tell you honestly whether that is likely to be a problem for your application.

What to bring to your appointment

  • Photo ID for the person on the lease
  • Your signed lease
  • Proof of income for everyone in the household, last 30 days
  • Proof of hardship — a termination letter, reduced-hours notice, or medical paperwork
  • Any notice from your landlord, including a late notice, a three-day notice, or court papers
  • Landlord contact details and how they take payment
  • Social Security numbers for household members, if you have them

Frequently asked questions about rental assistance

Who qualifies for rental assistance in Florida?

Rental assistance programs in Florida generally require that you live in the county you are applying in, that your household income is below a set limit, and that you can show a specific hardship such as lost work, a medical emergency, or a sudden drop in income. Most programs also ask for a lease in your name and a notice from your landlord. A New Life in Christ Ministries and Resources can look at your situation and tell you which programs you have a real chance with.

What is the fastest way to get housing assistance?

Call 211 first. In Miami-Dade this reaches 211 Miami and in Broward it reaches 211 Broward, both free and open 24 hours. They hold the most current list of which programs have funds available right now, which changes month to month. Then call A New Life in Christ Ministries and Resources at (786) 396-3144 to work through the applications.

What documents do I need for rental assistance?

Most programs ask for a photo ID, a signed lease in your name, proof of income for everyone in the household, proof of the hardship, any late notice or eviction paperwork from your landlord, and your landlord's contact and payment details. Bring what you have to your appointment.

Can you help if I already have an eviction notice?

Contact us immediately, and do not ignore the court paperwork. Deadlines in an eviction case are short and missing one can cost you the case. For legal advice about an eviction, contact Legal Services of Greater Miami at 305-576-0080 or Dade Legal Aid at 305-579-5733. A New Life in Christ Ministries and Resources is not a law firm and does not give legal advice.

Do you help with rent in Broward County?

Yes. A New Life in Christ Ministries and Resources serves both Miami-Dade County and Broward County. Our office is in Miami, so Broward residents should call (786) 396-3144 first so we can arrange the best way to help you.
